Next Gen Basketball Players Union Holds Historic First General Assembly Meeting

New Executive Committee members elected; Groundbreaking CBA negotiations ongoing

ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 20, 2024) — The Next Gen Basketball Players Union (NGBPU), the labor union representing the players of the NBA G League, is proud to announce the successful conclusion of its first-ever General Assembly meeting, a landmark event that brought together more than 200 professional basketball players from across the league on the eve of the NBA G League Winter Showcase. This historic gathering marks a significant step forward in uniting players to amplify their collective voice within the professional basketball landscape.

During the assembly, the Union elected its new Executive Committee to lead the organization through this pivotal time. The newly elected leaders include:

  • President: Rob Baker – Osceola Magic

  • Secretary-Treasurer: Yauhen Massalski – San Diego Clippers

  • Vice Presidents:

    • Joshua Pierre-Louis – SLC Stars

    • David Singleton – College Park Skyhawks

These leaders bring diverse experiences and a shared commitment to advocate for player rights, improve working conditions, and foster a stronger sense of community within the NBA G League.

In addition to the Executive Committee elections, the union announced the formation of an Advisory Board, which will be led by former Union President Andre Ingram. The Advisory Board will provide strategic guidance, leveraging the expertise of veteran players to further strengthen the Union's efforts.

“This is a monumental moment for the Next Gen Basketball Players Union and the players we represent,” said newly elected President Baker. “We are excited to build on this momentum as we work to secure a brighter future for all players.”

The Union also shared its ongoing efforts to negotiate a groundbreaking Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the NBA G League. This will be the first-of-its-kind for the league, aiming to set a new standard for player compensation, benefits and working conditions. These improvements would not only result in better working conditions for Union members and more engaging games for fans but also create an even more competitive league for NBA-level talent to develop.

“This CBA negotiation represents a critical opportunity to elevate the professional basketball experience for our players and also impact the quality of the game for fans,” said Secretary-Treasurer Massalski. “We’re committed to ensuring that our members’ voices are heard and that their needs are met.”

The Next Gen Basketball Players Union is dedicated to fostering solidarity, transparency and empowerment among its members. The Union’s leadership looks forward to building on the successes of this first General Assembly and continuing to advocate for meaningful change within the NBA G League.
