NEW YORK (Jan. 30, 2025) — The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and Gold Level Sports and Entertainment (GLSE) announced today the return of The Throne, a one-of-a-kind platform bringing a bracket-style basketball tournament to the high school ranks. The Throne will feature the nation’s top eight boys’ and girls’ high school basketball teams competing for the title of National Champions. The tournament is set to take place in East Rutherford, N.J., at American Dream from March 27-29, 2025. The championship teams in the boys' and girls' brackets will be awarded a grant from the NBPA Foundation to support their respective athletic programs.

In addition to the on-court competition, the NBPA has developed custom educational programming for the participating teams focused on life skills, personal wellness, and financial literacy workshops led by JPMorganChase to aid in their holistic development. The NBPA will also partner with the professional networking organization Minorities in Sports Business to host a ‘Careers in Sports’ panel at The Throne, which will provide entry-level professionals with resources and insight into the different career paths within the sports industry.

“We are excited to continue hosting The Throne as another great opportunity for the NBPA to establish meaningful connections with the next generation of players,” said Shaun Livingston, the NBPA’s Player Engagement Director, who oversees the Union’s elite youth basketball initiatives. With the on-court competition, educational workshops, and classroom sessions, The Throne is uniquely positioned to help standout high school players develop important skills to drive success on and off the court.”

Launched in 2023 by GLSE and the NBPA, The Throne was created under the guidance of GLSE’s player advisory board, which includes current and former NBPA members Danny Green, Harrison Barnes, Fred VanVleet, Dwight Howard and Rudy Gay. The Throne was designed as a curated experience for high school basketball players and provides a platform for elite competition while fostering the development of fundamental life skills off the court.

“We are so thrilled to continue our vision for The Throne in year three,” said Danny Green, three-time NBA Champion and co-founder of GLSE. “Having a national competition for the top performing high school teams is certainly something that was missing throughout my high school career. We’re proud to partner with the NBPA to bring this event to life for today’s elite youth athletes.”

At The Throne, some teams will opt to play under the name of their club program. Though a team might play under its club program name, the players on that roster are all students from the same high school. Last year, The Vale, representing Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Calif.), defeated the Explorers, representing Christopher Columbus High School (Fla.), in the boys' championship game with Brayden Burries securing the MVP award. In the girls' bracket, Hebron Christian (Ga.) defeated South Shore (N.Y.) in the championship game with Aubrey Beckham earning the MVP award. In 2024, The Throne's all-tournament first team consisted of top players in the class of 2024, 2025, and 2026:

  • 2024 Boys’ All-Tournament First Team: Brayden Burries (class of 2025), Cameron Boozer (class of 2025), Jacob Wilkins (class of 2025), Jamier Jones (class of 2025), and Myles Walker (class of 2025).
  • 2024 Girls’ All-Tournament First Team: Amirah Anderson (class of 2025), Autumn Fleary (class of 2026), Aubrey Beckham (class of 2025), Yahmani McKayle (class of 2024), and Ja’kerra Butler (class of 2025).

The participating teams for The Throne 2025 are expected to be announced near the end of the 2024-2025 high school basketball season.

Sponsors of The Throne include JPMorganChase, NBA 2K, Hospital for Special Surgery, Panini, Mitchell & Ness, and Capelli.
