NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio's Statement Regarding the Passing of Bill Russell
NEW YORK, NY, July 31, 2022 -- NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio issued the following statement today regarding the passing of Bill Russell:
“Bill Russell embodies what it means to be a champion in every sense of the word. His on-court accomplishments, including the unfathomable 11 championships and 5 MVP awards – all achieved with distinct grace and swagger – are entrenched in our NBA culture as the standard to which all aspire. Yet it is his work off the court that causes our players and the entire global community to view him with such reverence. At a time when it was far more difficult and dangerous to do so, Bill used his voice openly and fearlessly to serve as a fierce advocate for equality, civil rights and social justice. His actions laid the foundation not just for NBA players, but for professional athletes from all sports and others, to stand up and call for change in the face of racial injustice and inequality. Bill was also a founding father of our Players Association, one of the legendary 1964 All-Stars who barricaded himself in the locker room insisting that management recognize our union. We will continue to celebrate his incredible life and legacy as we support today’s players, whom he has inspired by setting the standard for excellence in our league. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, teammates, the Boston Celtics organization, and the entire NBA community who was fortunate enough to know the ultimate champion."
